In a second bag, I have a hat, umbrella, and sunglasses (pictured here), a case with small-sized shampoo, etc. 

When you receive this newsletter, I’ll be just arriving back in New York after 10 days in the South of Italy. I’m writing it before the trip, right after packing a very small carry-on (plus an extra bag with toiletries, jewelry, and eyeglasses).

I’ll share a post with photos soon, but for now, here are a few ideas that guided my packing this time, and may inspire your next trip:

Packing Tips from My Carry-On

• Capsule wardrobe mindset: Focus on versatility, comfort, and yes, a little repetition. Add a touch of fun to make outfits less predictable.

• Layers for changing weather: September in Italy means warm days, cooler evenings. I packed one denim jacket and my soft, yellow pashmina (always my go-to airplane essential, as it goes with everything).

• Color palette: Keeping to neutrals this time for the vibe I wanted, but any cohesive palette works when packing light.

• Hero pants: Since finding these pants, I don’t want to travel without them. Nylon, wrinkle-free, comfy elastic waist, barrel cut, easy to clean, and easy to dress up or down.

• Double-duty swimwear: One-piece swimsuits make great tops when layered. This trip, I’ll really put that into practice.

• Evening outfits: One skirt with a few tops (including T-shirts) and two dresses: simple and intentional.

• Shoes: Never heels, never new shoes. Comfort first.

• Carry-on tip: If you’re worried about shopping on your trip, bring a foldable bag and check in your carry-on for the return.
