How I Shop the Sales

Since I moved to the U.S. in 2009 and, for the first time, experienced all four seasons, I realized I needed to learn how to be a smart shopper quickly. I had to build a Fall–Winter wardrobe almost from scratch.

Because of my work - I was already a stylist - I began researching sales and soon discovered that many brands start offering discounts even before Thanksgiving. So I’ve always taken advantage of this time to shop for better-quality pieces that make a real difference in my wardrobe. And honestly, that’s still my strategy today.

Here’s how I approach sales:

1. I make a list.
It includes pieces I truly need, maybe to replace something worn out or that no longer fits, as well as what I call my wish list.
Even though I believe in an intentional wardrobe, I work in fashion, so, of course, I enjoy adding a bit of freshness each season. This year, for example, I’ve been looking for tall brown boots with low heels (I sold my high-heeled pair) and deep brown flats to fill a gap in my closet.

2. I focus on timeless, high-quality items.
I never shop randomly or browse sales racks “just to see.” Instead, I look for wardrobe staples from brands I trust, pieces with quality and longevity that I’ll wear for years without regret. Think: a good cashmere sweater, perfectly fitting jeans, or beautiful boots (if I’m lucky to find my size on sale).

What I avoid: super-trendy items, colors that don’t suit me, or anything that I’d buy just because it’s on sale.

3. My extra tip: wait for the second markdown.
Around three weeks after the first discounts, sometimes in December, you might find even better deals. That’s a great moment to invest in a coat in a color that flatters you (please, not another black one!) and helps you beat the Winter boredom. You know how much power colors have, right?

Finally, always consider your budget and your lifestyle. Being intentional when shopping is the best way to build a wardrobe that truly works for you.
