How to Elevate Your Casual Looks (with One Simple Idea)
I hear this all the time from clients:
“My office is casual. I wear jeans and T-shirts… but I don’t want to look the same every day.”
If you feel the same, here’s one concept that can change everything:
Add a little friction to your outfits.
What does “friction” mean in styling?
In fashion, we talk a lot about creating friction or tension in an outfit.
This can happen in different ways: through style, levels of formality, or shapes.
For example, I personally love feminine dresses and ballet flats.
But instead of wearing them together (which can feel too predictable), I like to mix things a bit:
A feminine dress with a less expected shoe
Ballet flats with jeans and a blazer
This creates interest. The outfit feels more intentional.
In this post, I want to focus on one specific way to create friction: Mixing different levels of formality.
Look 1: Tailored + Casual + Personal Touch
Tailored pants
T-shirt
Sandals
Sweater tied over the shoulders
Belt to finish the look
Here, the tailored pants create the friction. They instantly elevate the outfit.
The sweater adds another layer of interest, not just in styling, but also in color.
It creates a complementary color combination with the pants, which brings more creativity to the look.
Look 2: Casual Base + Polished Detail
T-shirt
Jeans
Slingback shoes
This is a very simple outfit, but the shoes change everything.
The slingbacks add a more classic, refined touch. That’s where the friction comes in.
To make it feel even more modern, I chose a blue pair, which creates a subtle complementary combination with the brown tones in the outfit.
Look 3: Adding Structure (Without Losing Comfort)
Same look as above
Blazer
Adding just a blazer makes the outfit feel more put together. But it’s still casual, you’re still wearing jeans and a T-shirt.
This is a good example of how you don’t need to change everything, just one piece can shift the entire look.
Look 4: Swap the T-shirt
Jeans
Button-down shirt
By simply replacing the T-shirt with a button-down, the outfit becomes more polished.
Same idea, same comfort level, but a different message.
You don’t need a completely new wardrobe to feel more stylish. You just need to add a little friction to your look to make it more interesting.
That’s what makes an outfit feel intentional, not just something you put on, but something you chose.
If your wardrobe feels repetitive or a bit too casual for how you want to present yourself, this is exactly what we work on together inside Style Bliss.
