What I Did on the First Snow Day in New York: A Little Closet Cleaning

I still get amazed every year when I see the first snow of the season.
This week, it was especially beautiful, all the trees turned completely white.
And because it was a quiet Sunday morning, I suddenly felt inspired to do a little closet cleaning.

I review my wardrobe at least twice a year, but I’ll confess something: the “maybe” pieces are not always easy, even for a stylist. By “maybe” pieces, I mean the clothes we’re unsure about, the ones that don’t fit quite right anymore, or no longer match our lifestyle, but we hesitate to let go of.

In my case, my body has changed in the last few years, and so has my size. I really dislike when something feels tight or uncomfortable… But then comes the familiar thought: “What if I lose five pounds?” Sound familiar?

Tip 1: Clothes that don’t fit right now shouldn’t live in your everyday closet

If a piece doesn’t fit today, it shouldn’t be the first thing you see every morning. This eliminates that little sting of frustration when you reach for pants you love but can’t comfortably wear anymore. I know this feeling very well, and removing those pieces from your daily lineup is an act of kindness to yourself.

Store them elsewhere for now, but do not let them occupy mental space every day.

Tip 2: It’s OK to keep “maybe” pieces, but put them in a separate place

If you still love a piece and it matches your lifestyle, but it’s not fitting your body at the moment, you can keep it, just not in your main wardrobe. Put it aside and revisit it in a few months with a clear mind. If, at that point, you know you're done with it, donate or sell it.

And here’s the truth: I’ve never once regretted something I donated or sold. Not once.

Tip 3: Clothing sizes mean nothing

What matters is how a piece fits you and how you feel when you wear it. Our bodies change, that’s normal, that’s human, and that’s OK. A number on a tag should never dictate how you show up in the world.

I’ll talk more about this next month, but for now, remember: choose comfort, choose confidence, choose today’s version of you.

Tell me: what’s your biggest struggle with closet cleaning?

And don’t you agree a cold Winter day is the perfect moment to declutter a little?
