The Summer 2026 Skirt: The City Sarong

Sarongs and large scarves have always been associated with the beach. We wear them as cover-ups over swimsuits, especially on vacation.

A few months ago, I shared another way to wear one: I styled a large scarf that I found at a second-hand shop as a top over pants. The idea came from a fashion show, and I loved how creative and versatile it looked.

This summer, the sarong has moved beyond the beach. It has become one of the season's biggest trends: the sarong is now worn as a skirt in the city.

I like both ideas, but if you want to wear a sarong as a skirt in an everyday city outfit, here are a few suggestions.

1. Balance it with city pieces

Pair the sarong with a relaxed button-down shirt, with the sleeves casually rolled up. Finish the look with leather sandals instead of flip-flops. These small changes make the outfit feel intentional and city-appropriate rather than looking like you're on your way to the beach.

2. Make sure it stays in place

A sarong isn't designed to function as a skirt, so don't rely only on the knot. Use a safety pin, a brooch, or even both to secure it properly. You'll feel much more comfortable knowing everything will stay exactly where it should.

3. Don't forget scarves over pants

I'm still a big fan of wearing scarves over pants. Whether you choose a smaller scarf or a larger one, it instantly makes your outfit more creative. It's not for everyone, but if it fits your personal style, it's definitely worth trying.

As with any trend, the goal isn't to wear it exactly as you see it on the runway. Adapt it to your lifestyle, your comfort level, and your personal style. That's usually what makes a trend feel modern, wearable, and like you.
