A Visit to Amy Sherald's "American Sublime" at the Whitney

Last week, I visited the Amy Sherald "American Sublime" exhibition at the Whitney Museum—and it was extraordinary.
I’ve been a fan of her work for a long time, and it was powerful to see so many of her paintings shown together in the same space.

You may know Amy Sherald as the artist behind Michelle Obama’s portrait, a work that quickly became iconic.

In a course I teach during New York Fashion Week for Portuguese-speaking professionals, we often highlight her portrait as an important example when discussing representation and inclusion—a conversation that remains essential. Her art will no doubt inspire many generations to come.

As an American realist, Sherald draws inspiration from classic, traditional portraiture, but reinterprets it in her way, focusing on the beauty and dignity of everyday Black American life.

Of course, I’m not an art specialist. But as I always say, art inspires me—both personally and in my work as a stylist.
The colors, the clothing, and the way people are portrayed—all of it tells a story. Just like our outfits tell a story about us.

Here’s a little part of the exhibition.
If you have the opportunity to see it in person, I highly recommend it!
