How I Shop Online for My Styling Clients

Online shopping is a big part of my work as a stylist. But shopping for a client is not simply browsing websites and sending links to things I like.

Before I start shopping, I need to know what we are looking for. What does my client actually need? What is missing from her wardrobe? What is her personal style? Her lifestyle? Her budget? What does she already own that we want to work with?

Once I have those answers, I can start researching.

Finding the right brands for each client

My clients have very different personal styles and very different budgets. This means I am constantly researching stores, checking collections, and discovering new brands.

A brand that works beautifully for one client may make no sense for another.

When I find something that could work, my client and I exchange ideas. She may love one option and immediately tell me that another one isn't for her. This is part of the process too. The more we work together, the more we refine the direction.

And then comes the most important part: trying everything on.

The best fitting room is your own room

When I was teaching future image consultants, I always told my students that the best fitting room is your own room.

I still believe that. At home, you can try a new item with the clothes you already own. You can see how it works with your shoes, your jackets, your accessories, and your real wardrobe.

There is no rush. No salesperson waiting for a decision. Hopefully, you also have good light and a mirror you are familiar with.

And if you are not sure about something? Try it again tomorrow.

Still not sure? Return it.

Keeping a piece is part of the shopping process

Finding an item online is only the beginning. Deciding whether it deserves a place in your wardrobe is just as important.

Does it fit well? Does it feel like you? Can you create several outfits with it? Does it add something you actually need, or is it too similar to something you already own? These are the conversations I have with my clients once their shopping arrives.

The goal isn't to keep everything we ordered. The goal is to make good decisions and build a wardrobe with intention.

Sometimes the best shopping decision is keeping the right piece. And sometimes, it's putting it back in the box and returning it.

If you would like help creating a more intentional wardrobe, you can schedule a discovery call with me.
