How to Wear Skirts When It’s Freezing Outside

I get this question a lot: “How do I wear skirts when it’s very cold?”

Many women assume skirts are only for mild weather, but that’s not true. With the right layers, skirts can work beautifully even in freezing temperatures.

During Copenhagen Fashion Week, we saw many women styling skirts in a way that felt both warm and elegant. The secret is not the skirt itself, it’s what you wear underneath and around it.

The Simple Formula

If you want to wear skirts when it’s very cold, start with these three elements:

1 - Cashmere or thermal tights
A good pair of warm tights makes a big difference. Cashmere blends or thermal fabrics provide insulation while still looking refined. I like this one:

2 - Heattech or thermal leggings underneath
For extra warmth, layer a thin thermal legging under your tights to keep skirts comfortable even on very cold days.

3 - Tall boots
Tall boots help protect more of your legs from the cold while creating a polished silhouette.

Here are some options:

This combination allows you to keep elegance without sacrificing comfort.

What About Ankle Boots?

One of the street-style looks featured ankle boots instead of tall boots.

In that case, visible socks can actually become part of the styling. If it fits your personal style, colorful or textured socks add warmth and personality to the outfit.

Layering changes everything. When you understand how to layer strategically, your wardrobe immediately becomes more versatile, and you don’t have to give up pieces you enjoy wearing just because of the temperature.

If you’d like help building outfits with what you already own or adapting your wardrobe to your lifestyle and climate, we can explore that together.
