Why Fit Matters More Than Price (A Real Shopping Story)
I recently wanted to buy a pair of black bermuda shorts. To be honest, I didn’t want to invest too much at first. Bermuda shorts can be a tricky piece, especially for petites, and I wasn’t sure how much I would actually wear them.
The first pair seemed promising. The size was right, but there was too much fabric. It felt bulky on my body, and the length wasn’t ideal either. I would have needed alterations to make them work.
Too much fabric, too long (ending at the widest part of my calves)
The second option looked better at first. I ordered two sizes to test a more relaxed fit: my usual size and one size up. I ended up preferring the larger one, but there was a problem. The pockets were opening, which is usually a sign that the piece is not well-made or doesn't fit properly in that area.
Pockets that open are usually a sign that the piece is not well-made or doesn't fit properly.
Then I ordered a third pair. The fabric was better, the fit worked, and the proportions felt right on my body. It also came with a belt I can use with other outfits, making it even more versatile. Yes, it was more expensive, but I know I will wear it much more.
And that’s what we call cost per wear.
This is something I talk about a lot with my clients. I help them shop more intentionally, focusing on what really works for their body, their lifestyle, and their personal style. Not just what looks good on a hanger or in a photo.
And here’s something that might surprise you: even stylists make returns. We never really know if a piece will work until we try it on. The process is part of shopping better. Trying, comparing, and understanding what works, that’s how you build a wardrobe that makes sense for you.
I also receive many questions from clients and followers about how to wear shorts, especially longer styles like bermuda shorts. So I’ll be back soon with another post, sharing a few styling ideas with my new pair.
